Rota virus is a major cause of nonbacterial gastroenteritis, especially in infants and very young children (6 months-2 years of age). Infection may be entirely asymptomatic or produce a spectrum of disease ranging from mild gastroenteritis to severe diarrhea and vomiting with dehydration.
Rota virus test is a qualitative enzyme immunoassay for the detection of rotavirus in human faecal samples as an aid in the diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. The test utilises a polyclonal antibody to detect group specific proteins. Rotavirus is the leading cause of gastroenteritis ("stomach flu") in children. This test is done to diagnose a rotavirus infection.
