A semen examination evaluates certain characteristics of a male’s semen such as the amount of semen number and quality of sperm contained in the semen. It may be done while investigating a couple’s infertility or after a vasectomy to verify that the procedure was successful.
A semen examination is usually done to help determine whether a man has an infertility problem due to which the couple is unable to have children. It may also be done to determine the success of a vasectomy or the reversal of the same. It is also used for testing donors for sperm donation.
To interpret test results use the reference range in the laboratory report.
For infertility testing, refrain from having sex or masturbation for 2-5 days before sample collection; carefully follow instructions provided.
