A ferritin blood test checks the amount of ferritin in the blood. Ferritin is a protein in the body that binds to iron. Ferritin is found in the liver, spleen, skeletal muscles, and bone marrow. Only a small amount of ferritin is found in the blood. The amount of ferritin in the blood shows how much iron is stored in your body.
A ferritin blood test is done to:
Men: | 18–270 (ng/mL) or 18–270 (mcg/L) |
Women: | 18–160 ng/mL or 18–160 mcg/L |
Children: | 7–140 ng/mL or 7–140 mcg/L |
*Reference ranges are provided as general guidance only. To interpret test results use the reference range in the laboratory report.
You may be instructed to fast for 12 hours before the test; in this case, only water is permitted.
