Creatinine is a chemical waste product that’s normally filtered out of your body by your kidneys. When your kidneys aren’t functioning properly, creatinine can accumulate in your body.
The creatinine blood test measures the level of creatinine in the blood. This test is done to see how well your kidneys are working. If kidney function is not normal, the creatinine level in your blood will increase.
A normal result is 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL for women.
*Reference ranges are provided as general guidance only. To interpret test results use the reference range in the laboratory report.
You may be instructed to fast overnight or refrain from eating cooked meat; some studies have shown that eating cooked meat prior to testing can temporarily increase the level of creatinine.
