Overview

A stool test involves the analysis of fecal matter to diagnose a medical condition generally related to a problem in the stomach, intestines, or another part of the gastrointestinal system. In may also be done to screen for gastrointestinal bleeding, which may be an indicator of colon cancer.

A stool analysis is a series of tests done on a stool (feces) sample to help diagnose certain conditions affecting the digestive tract. These conditions can include infection (such as from parasites, viruses, orbacteria), poor nutrient absorption, or cancer.

To interpret test results use the reference range in the laboratory report.
