A folic acid test measures the amount of folic acid in the blood. Folic acid is one of many B vitamins. The body needs folic acid to makered blood cells (RBC),white blood cells (WBC), and platelets, and for normal growth. Folic acid also is important for the normal development of a baby (fetus).
A folic acid test may be done to check for the cause of anemia, or to check for problems absorbing (malabsorption) folic acid, or to see if a woman has enough folic acid to prevent certain birth defects and allow her baby to grow normally.
To interpret test results use the reference range in the laboratory report.
Fasting for 6-8 hours before sample collection may be required. Certain medicines may affect the test results; your healthcare provider will advise you on which ones to stop taking.
