The enzyme amylase plays a vital role in the digestion of carbohydrates. It is produced by the pancreas and the salivary glands. Disease, infection or inflammation of these glands causes the release of amylase into the blood or urine in increased levels.
This test estimates the amount of the amylase enzyme in a patient’s blood or urine sample. It is used to analyze the increasing or decreasing levels of amylase over time. It can also act as a biomarker to detect and monitor diseases of the pancreas such as Pancreatitis; formation of gallstones and some digestive.
